A reach out to women

Proving that range anxiety is a thing of the past

Flier for EV Road Trip

EVA member Daphne Dixon, the Executive Director and Co-founder of Live Green Connecticut, as well as Executive Director of Connecticut Southwestern Area Cities coalition, plans to drive an EV cross-country to make the point that continued anxiety among women about electric vehicle (EV) range is unnecessary and that it has to end soon.

“We need women to be a big part of the EV movement,” Dixon said. “Women in particular are focused on range because they want to feel safe. They’re also concerened about charging stations, especially moms. If you have kids with you, you want to feel safe when you’re charging.”

Dixon, along with Live Green’s program manager Alissa Murphy, plans to travel approximately 5000 miles over three weeks on interstate highways and rural roads across the U.S. Driving a Mustang Mach-E, and with  sponsorship from Electrify America, the two women are planning a bon voyage event on June 6 in Fairfield, Connecticut, and a ‘checkered flag waving’ at their ‘finish line,’ the California Auto Museum in Sacramento, California on June 27.

15 states, 27 destinations

Events scheduled along the route include ride-and-drives in a slew of cities such as New York, Knoxville, Nashville, Dallas, and Los Angeles, and charging pit spots at five national parks including the Grand Canyon, Zion. and Death Valley. (Full list below)

“We want to show off EVs as much as we can,” said Dixon, explaining that in addition to displaying the Mach-E, local EV owners at every stop will be invited to offer rides and drives as well.

“It’s not just about the Mach-E, it’s about promoting all EVs.” Dixon said, adding that she is looking forward to participation from Clean Cities coalition groups across the country, many planning to be represented at the events.

A lifetime commitment

Dixon’s awareness of environmental issues began in her native Sacramento when she was just a child. “I remember going up to the Sierras and then coming back and being horrified by the smog and air pollution that hung around the horizon line as we descended into the Sacramento Valley,” she said. “Transportation is 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, and emissions have been linked to rising cancer rates across the country. It’s become an epidemic.”

Becoming active in a number of environmental organizations over the years, Dixon launched Live Green Connecticut largely to build pro-environmental networks among community members, leaders, businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, and houses of worship, and to present learning forums on such topics as zero-waste schools, regional food rescue, multi-community native garden/pollinator pathways, materials management engagement, and food scrap composting.

EVA members invited

Dixon and Murphy have extended an invitation to all members of the EVA to attend their scheduled events and/or to propose additional venues.

“We’ve been so impressed with the energy coming from the EVA chapters,” Dixon said. “We hope as many folks as possible will join us on our journey.”
