Google Maps Prioritizes EV Charging Stations for EV Owners

Google Maps is one of the most widely used mapping and navigation applications in the world. One of the most useful new features is the ability to switch gas stations with EV charging stations in the “points of interest” categories list for electric vehicle owners while using Android Auto. This replaces the instant search for gas stations. This logical change will allow users to quickly search for charging stations right from the map interface on Android Auto when connected to the infotainment system in a vehicle. As long as the user has their vehicle type set to EV in their settings, the option will switch automatically. Google Maps implemented this in vehicles equipped with Android Automotive since 2020, such as the Polestar 2. Since Maps tailors routes to the vehicle type (EV, ICE, or Hybrid) based on these settings, it only makes sense to build upon these features.

Maps also includes other EV centric features and context, including:

  • Real-time charging port availability

  • Charging speed filters

  • Plug type filters

  • Adding suggested charging stops to trips

  • Charging stations in search results (if a location has onsite charging)

In addition, Apple also will contribute to some functionality updates for EV drivers. iOS 17 will add real-time charging availability info for EVs that support Apple Maps EV routing; right now, only the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Porsche Taycan support it. With the update, you’ll be prompted to set up your preferred charging network if you use EV routing.
